The Challenge
South Africa is heavily dependent on primary coal for its power with (84.4% in 2021)
The primary coal mining industry continues to generate significant negative environmental and social impact in areas including emissions, water use & environmental footprint
Significant pressure on South Africa and Eskom to achieve net zero goals by 2050 but has no real low carbon energy alternative to coal in the short to medium term
South Africa is currently 6GW short of electricity & requires an additional 5GW to be installed each year to retire the projected 50% of installed coal capacity by 2035
Even if South Africa had the ability to rapidly install renewable power at scale, the coal industry employs over 90k workers and would result in the loss of livelihoods and stranded communities unless done in a just way
Shutting down coal mining will result in significant clean up liabilities that will need to be paid for
To meet its goals of a sustainable energy transition, South Africa must embrace innovative clean energy solutions that enable a just energy transition to 2050 with clean coal being one of the most readily available and impactful solutions
